Project Description:
Students voices and opinions are IMPORTANT! Students analyzed the US Declaration of Independence through the eyes of Frederick Douglass, a slave; they found that maybe, this country has not upheld all of its promises or has contradicted its own reasoning about why it needed to form in the first place. Their mission was to find promises or dreams written in the Declaration of Independence that have not come to fruition today (or are problematic in one way or another). Students chose topics such as Immigration, Police Brutality, and Gender Rights. They created provocative, complex, and nuanced political cartoons to express their thoughts and draw awareness to these issues. They, in a newspaper format, they will distribute their cartoons to the rest of our student body. With an in depth study of the formation of the US, from topics such as law to conquistadors to immigration, students were asked to go on a journey to explore the tensions between the original foundation of this country and it's current state.
